MÉDIATHÈQUE DE MONTRÉAL

Location: Montréal, Québec Canada
Type: Civic, Mixed-Use

This mèdiathéque project involved the combination of various programmatic functions within a new mid-rise library and media center in downtown Montréal. Several important factors were studied prior to the design process, including: sound control; security; circulation requirements; lighting needs; program flexibility; public vs. private space; accessibility; energy systems; climate control; site impacts; hours of operation; structural systems; and materiality. The building design utilized a concrete structural system with a glazed curtainwall. A sky-lit central atrium allowed for natural light to penetrate each floor of the building to minimize the need for artificial lighting. On an urban scale, the mèdiathéque's orientation and formal gesture were determined based on the adjacent buildings, transportation modes, infrastructure and views.
