ALLEY FLAT v2 DESIGN-BUILD

Location: Austin, Texas USA
Type: Residential

The Alley Flat Initiative (AFI) started in 2005 as a collaboration between the University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin), the Guandalupe Neighborhood Development Corporation (GNDC) and the Austin Community Design and Development Center (ACDDC). The purpose of the initiative was to develop a project delivery system for affordable and ‘green’ infill housing along underutilized alleyways in Austin, Texas. The objective is to combat gentrification pressures and improve sustainable design and construction practices. This AFI prototype (v2) was designed by students at the University of Texas at Austin and managed by the ACDDC for the client, GNDC. The final build was completed in six weeks by 15 students including:

> The design/construction of a porch & ramp.
> The installation of a rain-screen system.
> The design/construction of a privacy fence.
> The design/construction of an entry portico.
> The site landscaping around the house.
